I have been teaching WordPress to beginners for a few years now. And no matter how many time WordPress is labeled as easy to learn, I see people constantly struggle with even the small things.
Yes, I said it. The small things.
That’s what most of us who use WordPress a lot call them. And when someone can’t figure it out, often many of us just give a heavy sigh.
What we don’t remember is we all have been there. And if you don’t use WordPress on a regular basis, well, some things just don’t stick.
As many times as I have done in-person training, or even online, I always enjoy that ah-ha moment. The one where they finally get it. That stinking small detail that is finally conquered.
Here are 10 of those moments I have witnessed time after time.
Problem: I can’t find a setting below my post or page editor window that my friends says is there.
Ah-Ha Moment: It was unticked in the options at the top of the page.
Problem: Working in an editor window that is much too small or big.
Ah-Ha Moment: Didn’t have Enable full-height editor and distraction-free functionality in screen options and if not ticked, discovering that small, ridged lower right corner that allows you to size it by dragging.
Problem: Tired of having to untick the uncategorized category with each new post and not being able to delete it.
Ah-Ha Moment: Finding out that you can rename it or choose another default category under Settings > Writing.
Problem: Discouraged over the fact that your blog page or category page shows too many or too few posts .
Ah-Ha Moment: Seeing that it’s a matter of just changing a number in your Settings > Reading.
Problem: Frustrated that every time you hit return when doing a post in the visual editor, you cannot get a single space.
Ah-Ha Moment: Holding down Shift > Return does the trick.
Problem: Realizing that strange username you created is suddenly showing up as the author on every post.
Ah-Ha Moment: Coming across the option for Display name publicly as in your User Profile.
Problem: The permalink has an appending -1 on the end of it even though you trashed that page or post with the same title.
Ah-Ha Moment: Stumbling upon the solution that it needs to be permanently deleted, not just put in the trash.
Problem: Wondering why people are leaving comments on your Contact Page.
Ah-Ha Moment: Uncovering the fact you have comments open on all pages and making the decision to set them for only posts.
Problem: Finding all these people you don’t know suddenly appear with a User Profile.
Ah-Ha Moment: Discovering that the box in your Settings > General > Anyone Can Register was ticked. Just untick that little bugger and save… problem solved.
Problem: Going stark raving mad when everyone talks about the ability to choose a Heading 1, Heading 2, etc or changing the color of one word but it is nowhere to be found.
Ah-Ha Moment: You have been working for 5 months with a single line of tools because you totally never understood what Toolbar Toggle does.
So next time someone asks you that simple question that you only want to reply “What? It’s so obvious”, remember, we all have been there.
