I think it’s time. When I first started podcasting, I used a Rode mic with a USB. Back then, I heard more and more about the quality of XLR mics, so made the change and bought myself a Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface. Now since then I do believe USB mics have gotten a lot better, but that’s another topic.
A bit later I splurged on the Rodecaster Pro. I could hook up 4 mics. Lot’s of shiny lights and a plethora of granular control.
Well, although not very portable, I did get me a carrying case built for it and took it with me to CloudFest 2024 so I could hook up more than two mics and show of my shiny buttons (it made great pictures of pod recording LOL). But alas, on the trip back it didn’t do well and a couple of buttons went sideways.
So I bought a Rodecaster Duo Pro Interface to replace it. Why another Rode? I can’t quite remember my thought process at the time. It was a bit less in cost, and had inputs for only two mics, which in reality was still more than I needed.
Which brings me to today. I’m tired of the granular control as it’s overwhelming. Something gets changed by accident and I dig into the settings to try and figure that out. It’s an endless loop of frustration these days.
So in the next couple of weeks I am getting a Elgato Wave XLR. Simpler, nicely priced and all I really need.
As far as the Rodes? They go into my cupboard with various mics, other XLR interfaces and a variety of working, yet not needed tech.
