When we moved to Porto, we moved our business. Of course, being digital, it wasn’t a large undertaking. But decisions had to be made.
Personally we got rid of just about everything, from our car to our furniture and a lot between. For the podcast it was mostly gear with a lot of odds and ends. We sold our car, but everything else was either donated or trashed.
We gave ourselves eight checked in suitcases and four carry ons to pack our life into. Didn’t ship a single thing.
And when it came to tech gear, choices had to be made of course.
I knew my iMac would not likely survive in a suitcase. So I sold that and I got myself a MacBook Pro before we left.
I did pack several mics, elgato lights and other small stuff like chargers, etc.
My RodeCaster Pro and mics had their own case that was included in my carryons.
But I did toss a lot of stuff that just didn’t need to move with us like tons of stickers and even more tons of WordPress stickers I had in a box (will write about that someday).
And although not gear, I will mention all the t-shirts I had collected over the years at WordCamps and other events. Could not give them to anyone, such as a thrift shop, as they were branded. So a extra large hefty bag went to the dump :(
And last, DONGLES! Dongles and things between. And just a lost of stuff that I had collected for a long time. You may know the feeling. “Just in case.” But I knew that we did not have room for most of them.
So first I set aside all the gear I was taking with me and matched up anything that might serve as a backup. Damn where there a lot of iPhone charging cords. Numerous ethernet cords. USB and Thunderbolt galore. Ear pods. HDMI everywhere. Mice, keyboards, and some that looked like they belonged in a museum.
After that I went through them again, and went down memory lane, although a forgotten memory lane, as I couldn’t identify a lot of them. And there were the obvious ones that were so old that they would never be needed. As a result I threw a lot away.
Of course you can guess what happened. Since then there have been times when I needed one and I just knew that it was part of the group that found their demise. Sure, replacing most was not breaking the bank over time, but still, sometimes I would know I had one and search my much smaller collection I had brought over. No luck. Well, all in all, all things were good and not I can start collecting dongles again.
