Yesterday, on twitter I came across via my friends Dre and Tony from Sucuri.net. Knowing these two I expected something that I would need to spend a bit of time consuming, but it really was nothing more than Tony saying:
Backups to Your Backups
Now I cannot second guess what goes on in Tony’s head, but it had me thinking about something.
If you know me, I always am a huge instigator of backups. I cannot stress enough how important they are. In fact, if you were to contact Sucuri about a hacked site, I imagine one of the first things out of their mouths might be, And do you have a backup?
Now as I said before, I may not be on the right track on what Tony so eloquently expressed in so few of words, but still, it rang true to me in one way.
My First Backup
I host my site on WPEngine and have done so for several years. I wrote a review on it so I don’t need to regress and go over all the benefits of hosting there. But yes, they do full backups each and every day. Also, anytime I do anything to my site, I can easily back it up, just in case. So if things go wonky, or some loser in their basement who doesn’t have a life decides to hack into my site and destroy it, I can easily restore my backup.
My Backup to My Backup
For the third time I am admitting I’m not sure if this is what Tony was talking about. But, a few weeks back I was lucky enough to open an account at ManageWP. And guess what? They are also backing up our sites daily. (Of course, they have a lot more services than backups that I love, but for the sake of this post.)
So in reality, if one of my backups fail, I have a backup of my backup in a sense. No matter what, that makes me feel damn good.
Now, of course there are several other ways of doing this. I could easily download my WPEngine backup to my computer, or some storage on the cloud. And that is only one way.
To Tony, for whatever reasoning you have behind your short and profound insight, it made me think about my own situation and how I feel SECURE having a backup of my backup in a sense. And if you are looking for someone to keep your site secure, well, I cannot help but recommend my good friends over at Sucuri.
