Let me start this post by letting you know that this is not a rant, but an observation and something I have learned from experience.
I’m sure you’ve seen it. In some tech Facebook group, someone comes in and asks one of two questions.
What hosting would you recommend for my site?
I am thinking of using XXXX hosting.
There is nothing like falling into the vortex of hell itself by asking either one of these questions. Because as we all know, the thread with be filled with two kinds of replies.
A push of their own, favorite host.
A bashing of other hosts.
It ends up being a heaping mess of dozens of suggestions. In a nutshell, these kinds of replies don’t help anyone. Myself, I just get a headache.
Now granted, in those replies someone may actually go a step further and try to help the person by asking them more about their site and their needs. Trying to actually understand what host might fit them best. But they simply get lost in the waves of hosting nauseousness.
For as many years as I have been in the space, I have seen this happening. It could be at a meetup, a workshop, a Slack channel, or as stated before, on various social platforms. It really never is productive and often turns into a host bashing party that, personally, I find a waste of time and breath.
So when you are looking for a host, please, don’t do this.
Ask Individuals You Know and Trust About Hosting Solutions
Now it’s true, everyone is going to have a preferred host or hosts they recommend. Often those recommendations are based on their own experiences. There’s no way around that. Some may be a bit more subjective and branch out based on your needs, but that isn’t the point.
The best way to discover what host will work for you is the old tried and true ask someone you know and trust. Whether you take advice from the developer or designer who is doing your site, another professional in your circles of colleagues or even a good friend, reach out to those who objectively look at what you need and will suggest someone to fit your needs. It’s that simple.
For Those Giving Recommendations
All I can say to you is don’t be negative. Don’t trash some hosting company down to the marrow. If you client, colleague or friend has trusted you to give them advice, do just that. And if they ask you about a host you are considering, and you do have some no so good experiences with them, share those as they are, experiences. You can tell them what has happened to yourself or to people you know, but don’t define the host as the devil itself.
And most of all, keep it a conversation between the two of you.
