Gutenberg. This isn’t the first post or podcast you have seen on it, nor will it be the last.
And unless you live deep in the woods, or are burrowed in some cave, likely you have heard something about this new WordPress editor that comes out in WordPress 5.0. Let’s just say this. I think it’s going to be great. (I guess that’s easy for me to say.)
What I want to get into today wasn’t just Gutenberg, but how it will play in the space with eCommerce and WordPress. So I invited Sir Morten Gutenberg (newly appointed name) to join me since he has immersed himself in the waters of Gutenberg since day one and has shared a lot of insights and thoughts via the web and in presentations. So sit back and enjoy the ride.
We began with an overview of Gutenberg. What exactly is it? So I put Morten in a scene where a casual WordPress user approaches him at a WordCamp and asks, What is Gutenberg, Morten?
Then we moved into the realm of eCommerce. Standing right behind that first person, someone is patiently waiting to spring this question on him, Hey, Morten, I run an online store with 50 products. I use WooCommerce. Should I be worried about Gutenberg?
From there, we talked about the fact that there are a few eCommerce plugins for WordPress and I asked Morten what he considered the top implementation challenges for developers.
Reaching into my own experience talking with store owners, I shared the challenge I hear all the time from people thinking about starting a blog or keeping one running, specifically smaller stores. I asked him if he thought Gutenberg will make it more appealing to the small online store or will it translate into a barrier as just another new piece of WordPress to master?
We ended the conversation with a condensed version of the Morten Guide for Store Owners to make the Gutenberg transition smoothly.
