WooCommerce is perhaps the most popular ecommerce platform out there. However, the standard setup often leaves online store owners wanting more, especially for those wishing to add custom product fields to WooCommerce.
For example, suppose your store sells a computer software program. In that case, you might need to add a few custom fields to describe each variation concerning the operating system, such as Windows, iOS, or Linux. The problem? The default WooCommerce setup doesn’t give you that option. Instead, you’ll have to add custom product fields yourself.
The good news is that this is a relatively straightforward process. By the end of this article, you’ll learn how to set up WooCommerce custom product fields using the WooCommerce Custom Fields for Variations plugin.
How Custom Fields for Variations works
There are several scenarios in which you might need to provide variable product-specific information. Let’s take a quick look at how installing this plugin helps store owners and customers.
How it works from the customer’s perspective
To refer back to our software example above, you might have a variable product for each operating system and need to add custom fields for a monthly, annual, or lifetime license key.
No matter your reasons for adding more product information, putting in the product description can clutter up your product page layout and may not stand out enough for customers to notice.
Once you’ve installed WooCommerce Custom Fields for Variations, visitors to your store will be able to see the custom fields clearly displayed under the standard WooCommerce features.
This feature will allow them to make a better-informed purchasing decision, ensure they choose the correct product and improve their online shopping experience.
How it works from the store owner’s perspective
As the store owner, this plugin gives you the option to add text, textarea, select, checkboxes, or radio buttons when editing your variations.
Once added, they take on the native WooCommerce styling, so they look right at home on the product page.
On the back end, you can make your store manager’s life easier by grouping your custom fields under separate headings. You will also benefit by reducing the number of issues caused by customers buying the wrong variation of your products.
How to add custom product fields to product variations in WooCommerce
If you’ve got a complicated product lineup, you will want to add custom product fields to your WooCommerce store.
Once you have purchased the plugin and installed it you will want to create your custom fields.
Create your custom fields
Custom product fields are going to be tailored to the needs of your specific store. But for the purposes of this guide, we’ve outlined the process of adding custom product fields with this easy-to-use plugin.
To add a custom product field:
- Navigate to Products > Variation Field Groups.
- Click Add New.
- Give your field group a title (this will be used to define the group section in the variation edit tab).
Then Under Fields, click Add Field.
Here you have several options to select and fill out. Your choice will depend on your specific needs. The options are:
- Field Label – This is the label an admin user will see for the field.
- Field Type – Select the type of field you’d like to use. These are text, textarea, select, checkboxes, and radio buttons. The type of field you choose may enable additional fields.
- Field Description – Enter a description of the field (for admin eyes only).
- Field Options – Conditional: If you choose the field type checkboxes or radio buttons, this field will appear. Enter the options for your field, with one option per line.
Once you have filled in your field options, you will then need to scroll down and configure your Product Page Display Options, which are as follows:
Show Label? – Do you want to show the label on the front end?
Label Position – If yes, should it be above or to the left of the field value(s)?
Display as – Conditional: If you have chosen checkboxes as your field type, this field will appear. Choose whether to display your field values on the front end as a list (ul HTML markup) or a comma-separated list.
Once you have configured your field, click Add Field. Repeat the process for each custom product field, and when you have added all of the fields you require, click Publish.
