There are many ways to learn WooCommerce when you first jump into the waters. Between IRL and online, you have a lot of options.
Often, though, we end up going down the Google rabbit hole looking for something that will sequentially take us through each part. Many people come here to our site to learn specific parts, whether it’s basic product setup or more specific pieces, like understanding virtual and downloadable products.
But what if you want to learn the basics sequentially, get started by walking through all those basic features and options?
Today I’d like to share two resources that cover exactly that.
WooCommerce Basics by Video: WP101
I have written about WP101 off and on over the years. I know Shawn personally and have the highest respect for what is providing in the education space. His comprehensive 22-part WooCommerce tutorial series is perfect for beginners. It gives you a detailed view of every single panel and setting option in WooCommerce.
Watching a video alone sometimes just doesn’t do it. There might be questions that come up as you get deeper into it. WP101 has a very active members-only forum, which allows you to pop in and get the answers you need anytime.
WooCommerce by the Book: WooCommerce Explained: Your Step-by-Step Guide to WooCommerce
Sometimes there is nothing better than a book, whether it’s a physical copy you can with post-it notes or an ebook. In many cases, having a book to grab for a quick look-up or handy resource is just what you need. If so, my good friend Patrick Rauland and his co-author Stephen Burge have your back. I should note here that Patrick was lead for WooCommerce, so he walks the talk.
I went through the book from cover to cover and was really impressed. In fact, I find myself using it as a resource for to refresh myself on the basics even though I have been working with WooCommerce since its beginning. An excerpt from my review:
As a user of WooCommerce since its release, and having taught hundreds of store owners the basics of WooCommerce, I can say that this is the perfect resource for anyone who is either thinking of using WooCommerce, or has just started.
The details and order of instruction cover all the necessary details, and the use of screenshots and the availability of a demo site will help any novice to better understand the process of building an online store with WooCommerce.
Scattered between are great examples that make it even more clear plus they add some nice bonus material at the end that takes you a bit further than just the basic mechanics of WooCommerce.
From experience, I know that a lot of people when learning tech tend to gravitate toward video instruction, but in my opinion, nothing beats printed instructions. No matter what direction you are going with your WooCommerce education, this book is a great resource for both learning the plugin and referring to it as you build out your online store.
If you would like to check out the book, you can find it on Amazon here.
Think of Doubling Up on Your Learning
The reason I bundled these two options together is that, although by themselves they are fantastic, combined, they give you the best of both worlds.
For example, let’s say you are watching a video on shipping settings. The book will help to reinforce the learning and leave you with a printed roadmap. Or maybe you are reading about the variable products, but it would be helpful to see someone demonstrate it. So you see? The best of both worlds.
Of course, you can choose either WP101 or WooCommerce Explained: Your Step-by-Step Guide to WooCommerce, but the two together make a winning combo.
Happy Woo learning!
