Typically when I do a sponsored review of a theme, I have not had the opportunity to use it myself previous to the review. But in this case, that’s not how it goes. In fact, when I was looking back in November last year for a new theme, I had some definite things in mind. And as most people do, I wallowed in the sea of WordPress themes. That is until I discovered Baton Pro theme.
It was exactly what I needed.
So in this review I will be giving it a slightly different approach. I will be sharing the features, but also giving you some insight into how I used it for my own site design.
The Baton Pro Theme
There is a free version of the Baton theme that you can easily download and check out, but this review will be going over the feature of the Pro version, which I have found is well worth the money.
This theme joins the ranks of the many themes that offer you a custom website build without knowing code. But this one has its own unique features and approach.
This theme uses the WordPress customizer but before we dive into that, let’s look at some of the settings/options.
Here you have options to upload a custom logo (best if it’s a specific size) and the ability to hide and show certain elements globally.
In the color schemes, the free version of this plugin limits you to these four. But Baton Pro has other color customizations available through the customizer, again, well worth the cost.
And an option to put in your own footer content.
A few layout options can be set globally for some pages, posts and archives. These are not available on single pages or posts as an option, but I will introduce you to the Conductor plugin that will help you created customized layout for specific pages.
Any of these that you fill out will show up in your footer area by default like this.
The theme also comes with a Social Media widget that you can drop into any widget area to pull from these settings as well.
These are settings you find more and more in themes. But a custom CSS option is always great if you need to add some.
One-Click Child Themes
This is a really cool feature, especially for us non-coders (even some coders will like this one). If you don’t know the importance of a child theme, well, you might want to do a little research. But it’s good practice these days and I would recommend anyone do this. It’s easy and will make code customizations to your site much easier to do, even if you have someone do those, for down the road when your theme updates.
Time for Customizations
As I mentioned before, a lot of the strength of this theme lies in the customizer. And with the ability to add their free plugin Notes, and the Conductor plugin, you will learn that you can do amazing stuff with this theme. If you haven’t seen my post on the Notes plugin, you may want to check that out as well.
These two videos will give you a good feel for exactly what this theme can do.
A Look at Baton Pro in the Customizer
In this video I’ll walk you through of all the different customizations you will find via the customizer.
The BobWP Homepage
When I installed this theme, I pretty much followed a layout similar to the theme demo. In this video, I will walk you through my homepage to give you an idea of how you can create your custom layout and keep it updated.
The Widget Areas
Lastly, as you might guess, your widgets, after adding them in the customizer, can also be accessed under Appearances > Widgets. For example, you can see in this screenshot that the widgets for the homepage are also found here in the widget area called Front Page.
Last Words On the Baton Pro Theme
As you can guess, I do recommend the Baton Pro theme. It may not be the perfect theme for everyone, but if you are looking for more control of your site, you should check it out. The integration of both the Notes widget and the Conductor plugin brings some pretty powerful customizations to the table without having to know code.
To learn more about the Note widget, see this post here on my blog.
And watch for an upcoming post where I will be showing you how I customized an inside page using the Conductor plugin.
