Selling your eBook on your site or blog should not be rocket science. But although you might think that adding a simple PayPal button will do the trick, there are few other things that need to be done, that the button cannot accomplish on its own. What you need is something easy and flexible.
Selling eBooks with Easy Digital Downloads
When we sold our first eBooks, I had already discovered Easy Digital Downloads and knew how easy it was to use.
Take for example, this simple page that sells an eBook using EDD.
Setting Up Your eBook Download Page
Let’s take a look at what this page is comprised of.
Title and Description of eBook
This part is no different than creating a post or page in WordPress and you have all the tools you need in your WordPress editor.
The download image that goes on the page isn’t much different from adding a featured image on a post or a page.
Now we start getting into the custom fields that come specifically with Easy Digital Downloads. This is where you start having more control over how your eBook is presented.
Simply add the price of your eBook:
If you need variable prices, you can also do that. Maybe you want to sell the book but offer other options as well. In this example, we might sell it by itself, but also have an option to purchase it along with 30 minutes of Judy’s time to look at some of your headlines and send you feedback on them.
Your eBook Files
You want to make it easy for your fans to get that eBook file once they purchased it. With EDD, there is no mumbo-jumbo. Simply upload the file to your media library or add the URL for where the file can be accessed.
Limiting Downloads of Your eBook
Although it is tough to keep anyone from sharing your eBook, you can limit the number of downloads that the customer gets. Maybe you want to provide two downloads, just in case a customer loses their copy. Whatever the case, you will be able to set this globally for all your eBooks, but at the same time you can customize the number for any specific download/ebook. There are also a few other download setting options here.
What Else Do You Need to Effectively Sell Your eBook?
Of course, the sales of your ebook will depend on a lot. Is there an audience? Have you made it interesting and valuable to the reader? Do you have a plan for marketing it? These things and more will lead to the success of your endeavor as an author.
Here are a few ideas.
Free Downloads – You may intend to make money directly from selling your ebooks. But there might be times that you want to offer it free. This is a good enticement for potential customers, or even existing customers. The Free Download extension makes it easy to do this while retaining control over your downloads. You can see our post on it here.
Reviews – We all know how important reviews are to any product or service. Think about it. Books have thrived for years on reviews, even before they became digital. Giving your readers a chance to leave a review for others to read is priceless. The Review extension does just that and I show you how in this post.
Recommended eBooks – If you are selling several ebooks on your site, recommendations on what others are reading can really help. The Recommended Products extension will show ebooks based on other customers’ purchases.
Social Sharing Incentive – We all know social works. If someone reads one of your ebooks, what better way to get them to share about it by adding an incentive. With the EDD Social Discounts extension you are able to give buyers that share your ebooks discounts. This is not only a great way to get the word out, but also encourage your existing readers to buy another book from you.
Thank Your New Readers – Whether it’s a new reader or an existing one, once they make the purchase, give them a special thank-you. The Conditional Success Redirects extension will send them to a page that you specify. It could be a special thank-you message, a discount on a future ebook, or something cool like insider information that relates to their ebook. The point is to make them feel special. In this post we show you how easy it is to use.
As you can guess, these are just a few ideas. For your ebooks, you cannot go wrong with Easy Digital Downloads, which is free. And if you want to up your game, look at these posts on our site or check them out on their site. Just perusing those extensions will likely give you some more ideas.
