If you use the Yoast SEO plugin on your WordPress site, you will want to make sure you have the Social settings in place. Some of these are important if you are active on social, while others will be critical in any case, as they affect when other people share your posts on their own social accounts.
So let’s go through the settings.
Here you will find the option to add any social media accounts that you want, based on the choices here. I would recommend only filling out the ones that you are active on. It will not do you, your site, or your SEO any good to have a Twitter account listed here if the last tweet you sent out was 12 months ago.
The Add Open Graph meta data is by default something you should toggle if you want to take advantage of Yoast and your Facebook account.
Note here that what you will see will depend on your settings under Settings > Reading.
Front Page Displays Latest Post
If you have the settings this way.
Then you will have these options.
If you have it set like this.
Then you will have fewer settings here. The reason for this is that the settings for Image URL, Title and Description will actually need to be set in your Yoast settings on that specific page you have assigned on the Front page.
The Front Page Settings
Here you have a couple of options. You can create a custom title and description or pull in your home meta description. Unless you want it different for some reason, pulling in the home info is an okay route to go.
This is an incredibly handy setting. It allows you to put in a custom image that will be used by default if your post or page is shared, and it doesn’t have an image. Another example may be that it’s pulling in some other image from the sidebar, which you don’t want to happen. This can prevent that as well. So it’s just a good precautionary measure. I would recommend the size of 1200 x 628px.
Facebook Insights and Admin
If you use Facebook Insights, you might want to consider connecting your site here. You can learn more about that here.
Twitter cards can be very useful for SEO and are really underused. These simple settings allow you to add them to your site and choose between summary and summary with large site.
To really understand what they can do and what they are, I would recommend starting here to learn more about Twitter cards.
If you use Pinterest and/or have a lot of images that you want people to share there, set this up. You will need to go through a few steps for verification of your site, but it might be worth it.
Google+ is still around and if you are using it, take advantage of this setting. But note that this only works if you have a Google+ page for your business. It does not work on your normal Google+ profile.
One final note, as can see from the screenshot regarding Facebook, there are also some very useful social settings for each post and page as well. So don’t forget to take advantage of those as well.
So that’s it. Making sure these settings are active and completed will help you with your social SEO.
