Whoa, when I start talking community, I don’t mess around.
But seriously, this is simply a lead in to a lot of what I will be talking about here on the blog. Because any community is shaped by those who have their hands on it. It’s that simple.
The WordPress Community
My friend Chris Wiegman wrote a good post breaking down the WordPress community. There was a lot I agreed with and I could elaborate on. In reality, it’s how we each perceive it. There is no hard boundaries or defined parameters. Sometimes what we think of as the WordPress community in our minds can be a lot different than what real experience has shown us.
The one fact is that it is a unique community. And diving into that aspect deeper will be something I save for a future post.
Business and Social Communities
This is another piece of the puzzle. Do you look at the WordPress community as the business community? Or more of a social community? Or perhaps a blend.
Do we all hold hands and sing kumbaya? Or are there cliques, clubs, egos and challenges like every other community? Likely there is all those things.
But these are all questions I will be pondering here throughout the content I post.
The Old Business Community
Now maybe old isn’t the proper word as it still exists. But when we ran our marketing business starting in the early 90’s, it was really broken down into two communities.
The business community that was typically the local businesses and your participation in organizations like Chambers of Commerce.
Your geographical community, which could be viewed as your neighborhood or your town/city.
Things have certainly evolved over time and what we may not have labeled as community back then, is now a spread of various kinds of communities each one of us is a part of.
There’s a lot to unpack here. And I have a lot of stories I can tell you. So hang on to your hats.
