During Web Week, we are turning to eCommerce and interviewing six experts. Today we chat with Beka Rice with SkyVerge.
Tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
I’m our WooCommerce Product Lead at SkyVerge. I handle development, planning, design, and direction for our WooCommerce plugins. I also write at Sell with WP – where we help merchants learn more about running an eCommerce store with WordPress, giving them product recommendations and writing specific, actionable tutorials. Finally, I’m also involved in planning, marketing, and support for our Jilt app, which works with several eCommerce platforms to help merchants recover lost revenue from cart abandonment.
What was the coolest thing you saw happen in the eCommerce space in 2016?
Apple Pay for the web has definitely been an interesting development, bringing superior security to eCommerce payments for Apple users. It’s an absolute bear to get set up, but it’s a really smooth experience and one that will be coming to WooCommerce merchants for several gateways soon 🙂
Share with our readers an eCommerce site you worked on or found particularly interesting this past year.
I didn’t work on this, but I really liked the booking experience with Envy Rentals.
Now time to look to the future. Tell us your prediction for what we might see coming to eCommerce in 2017?
Give us your one best tip for anyone who is considering starting their first online store.
The most important thing you can do is connect deeply with your audience, as this will help marketing, word of mouth referrals, and your product-market fit. Find the forums, Facebook groups, or subreddits that your audience uses, and participate. Connect with these people to learn more about needs and how your product addresses them, and if your product fits the bill, share it; however, focus more on learning than marketing.
Lastly, tell us what was your favorite place to shop online for the holidays and why.
Amazon of course 🙂 I have a couple of family members that work there so I’ve got to be loyal!
